The honest version of this subject is short: most rug cleaning needs cold water and patience, and most products sold for it make things worse.

That is the whole list. Nothing on it is expensive.
What pH means and why it is the only spec that matters
Wool is keratin — a protein — and proteins are damaged by alkali. That single fact governs product choice.

Most general-purpose household cleaners are alkaline because alkali cuts grease. That is exactly why they should not go near wool. The mechanism is in cleaning wool rugs.
The claims that mean nothing
Unregulated words
"Pet-safe", "eco", "natural", "non-toxic" and "green" are not regulated terms and say nothing about pH. Some plant-derived cleaners are strongly alkaline and worse for wool than a conventional neutral product. Read the pH, not the front of the bottle.
"Carpet shampoo" deserves separate warning. It is formulated to be extracted by machine, and any residue left in the pile is sticky — a shampooed rug attracts soil faster than it did before, which owners then read as needing more cleaning. This is one of the most common self-inflicted problems in common mistakes.
Stain "removers" with solvents frequently spread the stain and can strip dye. Test on the back of a corner or do not use them.
Products for specific problems
Oil and grease. Not a liquid problem. Cover with cornflour or bicarbonate of soda, leave several hours, vacuum, repeat. Water spreads oil rather than lifting it — rug stains.
Odour. Bicarbonate of soda left on the pile overnight and vacuumed out handles most domestic smells. Pet urine is not an odour problem, it is a chemical one, and it is a professional job.
Moths. Cedar and lavender are mildly repellent and lose potency; refresh annually. They are a supplement to disturbance and cleanliness, not a treatment — moth damage.
Equipment worth having
A vacuum with a switchable beater bar matters more than any cleaning product. Beater bars shred fringes and accelerate pile loss on older rugs, and a great many rugs are damaged by vacuuming rather than by anything spilled on them.

What to leave to a professional
Anything requiring immersion. Anything on silk, viscose or an antique. Anything where the colourfastness test transfers dye. And anything where your first attempt made the area larger — see DIY vs professional.

Cold water, in most cases. Where that is not enough, a wool-specific detergent at pH 5–7, used weaker than the label suggests and rinsed until the water runs clear. Wool's problems come from over-treatment far more often than under-treatment.
