Outdoor rugs have exactly one right answer on fibre, and the market sells three things that sound like it and are not.
The one that works
Solution-dyed polypropylene.
The phrase is doing real work. In ordinary dyeing, colour is applied to finished yarn and sits on the outside of the fibre — sunlight breaks it down from the surface inward. In solution dyeing, pigment is added to the molten polymer before the fibre is extruded, so the colour runs the whole way through.
There is effectively nothing to fade off. A solution-dyed polypropylene rug holds its colour through years of direct sun, where a conventionally dyed synthetic of the same construction is visibly washed out after one summer.
Polypropylene also absorbs almost no water at all — under 0.1% by weight — which is why it can be hosed, left in rain, and dried in an afternoon.
Three phrases that are not the same claim
"UV-treated" and "UV-stabilised" describe a surface finish or an additive that slows degradation. Both are weaker than solution dyeing and both fade. "Fade-resistant" is unregulated marketing language with no defined meaning. "Indoor-outdoor" describes where a rug may be used, not how it was coloured. If the listing does not say solution dyed, assume it is not, and ask.
The rest, honestly
Polyester. Takes bright colour, softer underfoot, and both fades and crushes faster than polypropylene. Reasonable on a covered porch that gets no direct sun; poor in the open.
Nylon. The most abrasion-resistant fibre available and the worst of the synthetics for UV. It is a commercial indoor fibre being sold outdoors on its durability figures, which do not transfer.
PET / recycled plastic. Usually polyester by another name, with the same behaviour. The recycled content is a genuine environmental argument and not a performance one.
Vinyl and woven PVC. Genuinely weatherproof, wipes clean, and it feels like what it is. Right for a poolside or a boat deck, wrong anywhere you want a rug to read as a textile.
What fails outdoors
Every natural fibre, for the same underlying reason: they absorb water.
Jute rots. It also watermarks from clean water indoors, so outdoors it has no chance.
Sisal absorbs atmospheric moisture even without rain, expands, ripples and eventually mildews.
Seagrass is sometimes marketed as suitable because the fibre is naturally waxy and less absorbent than the others. It is still a plant fibre, and in sustained damp it still fails.
Cotton mildews quickly and holds the smell.
Wool is the one people most want to be wrong about. Wool handles occasional damp well and sustained damp badly — it felts, mildews, and in a covered but humid space it will smell. A wool rug on a covered terrace in a dry climate can work; anywhere with real weather it is a mistake.
Construction
Flatweave, in almost every case. No pile means water drains through and the rug dries in hours rather than days.
Avoid a solid backing. Rubber or latex backings trap water underneath, which is the main mechanism by which outdoor rugs — and the decking under them — go mouldy. An open weave that drains is worth more than any coating.
Reversible flatweaves are common outdoors and genuinely useful: flip the rug when one side has taken sun, and it fades evenly.
Sizing and placement
Same rules as indoors: size to the furniture arrangement, front legs of the seating on the rug at minimum, and leave a consistent margin at the edges of the terrace — layout rules for area rugs.
Two outdoor-specific points:
Weight it or secure it. Polypropylene is light and a flatweave in wind becomes a sail. Furniture on the rug is usually enough; on an exposed roof terrace or balcony it may not be.
Lift it regularly. Whatever the rug is made of, the surface underneath needs to dry. A rug left flat on decking for a season leaves a permanent mark on the boards and grows mildew in between. Lift and sweep monthly.
Maintenance
Hose it, and let it dry fully before laying it back down. Vertically if possible — over a railing or a line — because a flat rug dries from one side only.
Do not power-wash. It separates the weave.
Mildew comes off with a dilute bleach solution on polypropylene, which tolerates it completely — this is one of the few places where bleach is the correct tool, and it is safe precisely because there is no wool involved. Never use it on any natural fibre — common cleaning mistakes.
Bring it in for winter. Not because the rug cannot take the cold, but because months of trapped moisture under a rug that never dries is what actually finishes outdoor rugs. Roll it, never fold it, and store it dry — rug storage.
Expected life
Three to seven years for a good solution-dyed polypropylene rug in real outdoor use. One to two for a conventionally dyed synthetic in direct sun.
That is a shorter horizon than any indoor rug and it is the correct expectation to buy with. An outdoor rug is a consumable — which is an argument for buying the right fibre cheaply rather than the wrong fibre expensively.
