Blue is the second pillar of the Persian palette after madder red, and unlike red it has essentially one historical source: indigo.
Where the colour comes from
Indigo does not dissolve in water and cannot be applied like other dyes. It has to be chemically reduced in an alkaline vat into a soluble, yellowish form, the yarn dipped, and then lifted into the air — where it oxidises back to insoluble blue in front of you. Depth of colour comes from repeated dipping, not from concentration.
Two consequences follow, and both are visible in the finished rug.
First, indigo sits on the fibre rather than bonding into it, so it abrades. Look at the tips of a deep indigo pile against its base: the tips are usually lighter, and that graduation is one of the more reliable signs of genuine indigo and real age.
Second, because depth depends on dip count, batch-to-batch variation is substantial. This is why abrash — horizontal banding in the field — shows up so clearly in blue grounds. It is characteristic, not a fault.

A predominantly blue field is less common in older Persian weaving than a blue border or medallion — madder red held the field in most traditions. Rugs with a genuinely blue ground, particularly Kerman and some Tabriz production, were often woven for export where blue suited Western interiors better than red.

Telling indigo from synthetic
The three checks
Compare tip to base of a single strand of pile — indigo abrades lighter at the tip. Look for abrash across the field — vat variation is hard to fake convincingly. Press a damp white cloth firmly on a deep blue area — indigo that has been properly washed will not transfer; unstable synthetic often will.
Synthetic indigo has been available since 1897 and is chemically identical to the natural article, so a laboratory cannot always separate them and neither can you. What you can read is behaviour: uniform, flat blue with no variation across a large field, identical from tip to base, is modern industrial dyeing regardless of which molecule produced it.
Living with blue
Blue is the easiest Persian palette to place in a contemporary room, which is why it carries a small premium in the current market over comparable reds. It sits comfortably against grey and off-white walls where madder red can feel emphatic.
Practically, deep blue shows lint and pet hair more than a busy red field does, and it shows sun damage more obviously because the fade is towards a visibly different colour rather than a softer version. Rotation matters — see caring for Persian rugs.

Common questions
Why do some blue rugs look green in places?
Indigo over a yellow ground produces green, and the yellow dyes used historically — weld, vine leaf, pomegranate rind — are far less lightfast than indigo. As the yellow fades the green drifts back towards blue, so a rug that reads blue-green in one area and blue in another is usually showing its age honestly.
Do blue Persian rugs fade?
Indigo is one of the more lightfast natural dyes, but it does soften. What fades unevenly is a rug half in sunlight — rotate it twice a year. Early synthetic blues are less stable and can shift towards grey.
