How to Put a Rug Over Carpet

It works, and it needs a different pad and a different sizing logic — how to stop it rippling, creeping and denting the carpet underneath.

Putting a rug over carpet is treated as a faux pas and is frequently the right answer — in a rental, over worn or unloved carpet, or to define a zone in a large carpeted room.

It just follows different rules from a rug on a hard floor.

Why the usual pad is wrong here

A standard felt-and-rubber pad works on a hard floor because the rubber grips something rigid. On carpet there is nothing to grip — the pad, the rug and the carpet all move together, and the rug creeps anyway.

Use a carpet-to-carpet pad

These have a textured or tacky gripping surface designed to key into carpet pile rather than grip a smooth floor, and they are firm rather than cushioned. A soft pad on top of carpet makes the whole assembly spongy and the rug ripples.

Firm, not thick. The mistake is adding cushioning to something already cushioned. You want the rug to sit still, not to feel softer.

Alternatives that work: double-sided carpet tape at the corners and midpoints, or purpose- made rug grippers. Both are reversible, which matters in a rental.

More on pad types in rug pads.

Choose the rug for stability

Three properties do most of the work:

Weight. A heavier rug moves less. This is where a hand-knotted wool rug or a dense flatweave outperforms a light washable rug.

Low pile. Height differences between rug and carpet are more visible and more of a trip edge. Low pile sits down better.

Stiffness. A rug with body lies flat; a floppy thin rug telegraphs every ripple in the carpet beneath.

Sizing is different

On a hard floor you leave 45–60cm of exposed floor. Over carpet the logic changes, because the surround is not a feature you are revealing — it is more carpet.

Go larger rather than smaller. A small rug marooned in a sea of carpet reads as an accident. A generous rug that clearly defines a seating zone reads as a decision.

Anchor it with furniture. Front legs on at minimum, as ever — the weight of the furniture is doing a lot of the anti-creep work here.

Contrast helps. A rug in a similar tone to the carpet beneath reads as a mistake. A clear difference in colour, pattern or texture makes the layering deliberate.

What it does to the carpet underneath

Denting. The rug and any furniture on it compress the carpet pile, and after a year or two the outline shows when the rug moves. On wool carpet this mostly recovers with time and a damp cloth; on polyester it may not.

Uneven fading. The covered area stays darker. Real, permanent, and the reason to move the rug occasionally if you intend to remove it eventually.

Trapped moisture. Two layers of textile hold moisture longer. Lift the rug periodically in humid rooms, and dry spills through both layers rather than just the top — musty smell.

Where it genuinely helps

Rentals, where the carpet is not yours and not to your taste.

Worn or stained carpet, where a rug is cheaper than replacement.

Large carpeted rooms, where a rug defines a seating zone that the uniform carpet does not — rug layout rules.

Sound and warmth, marginally, though carpet already provides most of that.

The one place to avoid it

Doorways and thresholds, where the extra height is a genuine trip hazard and doors may not clear. Measure the clearance first — see how to measure your room.

Common questions

Can you put an area rug over carpet?

Yes, and it is a legitimate solution in rentals, over worn carpet and to define a zone in a large room. It needs a firm pad rather than a soft one, and a rug with enough weight and stiffness not to ripple.

How do you stop a rug moving on carpet?

A rubber pad does very little on carpet, because there is nothing rigid to grip. Use a dedicated carpet-to-carpet pad with a textured gripping surface, or double-sided carpet tape at the corners. Weight and a low-pile rug help more than any pad.
