Wool behaves the way it does because of four structural features. Understanding them makes the care instructions obvious rather than arbitrary.
Crimp
Wool fibres have a natural three-dimensional wave — anywhere from a few to over twenty crimps per centimetre depending on the breed. Compressing a crimped fibre stores elastic energy; removing the load releases it.
This is the entire explanation for wool's resilience. It is why a sofa leg leaves an indentation in a wool rug that recovers over a day or two, and why the same weight leaves a permanent flat spot in polyester.
Finer wool has more crimp per centimetre and feels softer. Coarser wool has less crimp, longer staple, and wears substantially better. Rug wool is deliberately coarser than apparel wool for exactly this reason — a rug is not meant to feel like a jumper.
Cuticle scales
The fibre surface is covered in overlapping scales, like roof tiles pointing towards the tip. Two consequences follow.
Dry soil sits on that scaled surface rather than working into the fibre, which is why vacuuming recovers so much more from wool than from a smooth synthetic filament.
And under heat, moisture and agitation together, those scales interlock irreversibly — which is felting. This is why you brush a wool rug in the direction of the pile and never scrub it, and why hot water is prohibited. Felting is not reversible by any means.
Lanolin
The natural grease coating the fibre. It repels water long enough for a spill to be blotted before it penetrates, and it contributes to soil resistance.
Lanolin is also why wool wants mildly acidic cleaning. Alkaline solutions — most dish soaps, ammonia, many general-purpose cleaners — strip it, leaving the fibre dull, brittle and noticeably less soil-resistant afterwards. Detail in cleaning wool rugs.
Moisture regulation
Wool absorbs up to about 30 percent of its weight in water vapour without feeling damp, and releases it as ambient humidity drops.
This has a practical consequence people rarely connect to the rug: wool moderates room humidity slightly, and in doing so works against dust mites, which need relative humidity above roughly 50 percent to thrive. It is a genuine, if modest, point in wool's favour for allergy sufferers.

Judging wool quality by hand
The compression test
Grip a handful of pile firmly, hold for five seconds, and release. Good rug wool springs back almost fully and immediately. Poor wool, or dead wool, stays compressed and has to be teased back up.
Then look at the pile from a low, raking angle. Good wool has visible lustre — a soft sheen that shifts as you move. Dead wool is flat and chalky and does not.
Finally, feel it. Good rug wool feels slightly cool, dense and springy. Dead wool feels dry, light and faintly crunchy.
Dead wool (or skin wool) is pulled chemically from hides after slaughter rather than shorn from a living animal. The process damages the fibre. It is legally "100% wool", which is why that phrase alone on a label tells you very little, and it is common in inexpensive machine-made rugs.

Altitude and poor pasture produce better rug wool. It is counterintuitive but consistent: harder conditions grow coarser, higher-lanolin fleece, which is precisely what a floor covering wants.
