Fibre and construction move the number: silk is roughly double wool, viscose commands a premium because it is difficult and risky, and hand-tufted rugs cost less only because they cannot be immersed.
What the price difference actually buys
Two questions separate the services
Do you dust the rug before washing? Do you wash off-site by immersion? A no to either means surface cleaning — a legitimate service for jute, sisal and tufted rugs, and not a wash. It should not be priced as one.
A real plant dusts first — compressed air or a vibrating machine removing kilograms of dry grit before water touches the rug — then immerses, rinses until the water runs clear, and dries under controlled conditions.
In-home cleaning cannot do any of those four. It cleans the top of the pile and leaves the grit in the foundation, which is what actually wears a rug out. Detail in cleaning methods.
Is it worth it?
On a hand-knotted rug, comfortably. A $400 wash every four years is about $100 a year against a rug that lasts decades and can be resold — and washing is the single largest factor in whether it lasts eighty years or fifteen.
On a $300 machine-made rug it usually is not, and low-moisture maintenance plus eventual replacement is the honest answer.

Reducing the bill legitimately
Vacuum the reverse twice a year. Less grit arriving at the plant means better results and, sometimes, fewer passes.
Deliver it yourself if you can — collection is often $25–100.
Bundle rugs. Several at once frequently attracts a discount.
Do not wait for it to look dirty. A rug washed on schedule cleans in one pass; one left for fifteen years may need two, and may not fully recover.
Deal with accidents immediately. Urine treatment costs a fraction of what dye correction does — pet urine.
Questions to ask before booking
Do you dust before washing? Do you wash off-site by immersion? How do you dry, and how long does it take? Do you test colourfastness? Are you insured for the rug's value? What is the turnaround?
Two to three weeks is normal for a proper plant. Same-day is a warning sign — nothing dries properly in that time.
What to expect back
A rug that feels noticeably softer and reads deeper in colour. If it comes back stiff or dull, the rinse was insufficient and detergent residue remains, which will attract soil quickly.
Say so. A reputable plant will re-rinse it.
