What is actually happening
Urine is alkaline, and rug dyes — particularly natural ones — are stable only within a narrow pH range. Within hours the alkalinity shifts the dye itself. What you see afterwards is not soil on the fibre; it is the colour having changed.
That damage cannot be cleaned out, because there is nothing sitting on the surface to remove.
And it does not stop. As urine dries it becomes more alkaline, so the reaction accelerates rather than halting.
Uric acid crystals remain in the foundation after the liquid is gone. They are not water-soluble, which is why the smell returns in humid weather even after the rug looks and smells clean.

Blot up everything you physically can, then stop. Do not apply water, vinegar, detergent or a supermarket stain product. Call a rug plant today and tell them what it is — they have specific treatment for it. Every hour of delay is more dye shift.
In the first minutes
- Blot, hard and repeatedly. Thick white cloth or paper, pressed down with body weight. Stand on it if the rug will take it. You are trying to remove volume.
- Keep going far longer than feels necessary. Urine wicks down into the foundation and the pad beneath; surface blotting removes a fraction of it.
- Lift the rug and check the pad and the floor underneath, both of which will have taken some.
- Then stop, unless the rug is synthetic — see below.
What not to do
Do not use vinegar. It is widely recommended and it is acidic, which sounds right — but on a rug with unstable dye it can cause its own migration, and it does nothing about the uric acid crystals.
Do not use ammonia, ever. It smells like urine to an animal and encourages repeat marking in the same spot.
Do not use a steam cleaner. Heat sets the proteins and permanently bonds the odour into the fibre. This is the most damaging thing available and it is what most people reach for.
Do not use oxygen bleach or "pet stain remover" containing it on wool. It digests the fibre — common mistakes.
Where DIY is reasonable
On a synthetic or washable rug, you can handle it yourself:
Blot thoroughly. Rinse with cold water and blot again, several cycles. Then apply an enzyme cleaner formulated for pet urine, following the dwell time on the label — enzymes break down the uric acid crystals, which is the only domestic method that does.
Dry with air reaching both faces. A washable rug goes in the machine, which is the entire argument for owning one if you have animals.
Prevention, honestly
Repeat marking is the usual pattern — animals return to a spot they can still smell, even when you cannot. Enzyme treatment matters as much for stopping recurrence as for the current accident.

What a professional does
Full immersion washing with a pH-correcting treatment, enzyme application to break down crystals, and in some cases dye correction on the affected area. It is one of the more expensive treatments in the trade and it is frequently only a partial recovery.
