Rug Colors

Natural and synthetic dyes, abrash, fading and colour-run — how a rug's palette is actually made, and how to read the way it has aged.

Colour is where a rug's age, origin and honesty are most readable — and where the most confident nonsense is spoken in shops.

Where the colours come from

For most of the history of rug weaving, the palette came from a small number of plant and insect sources, and the same ones recur across every tradition because they are what worked.

Red
Madder root — the dominant red everywhere. Ages to brick.
Deep red / crimson
Cochineal and lac insect — costlier, more purple
Blue
Indigo, from a vat. The only significant historical blue.
Yellow
Weld, vine leaf, pomegranate rind. The least lightfast.
Green
Indigo over yellow — so it drifts blue as the yellow fades
Brown / black
Walnut husk, oak gall, iron. Iron corrodes the wool.

Two of those have consequences you can see on any old rug.

Green drifts. Because green is indigo overdyed with yellow, and the yellows are far less lightfast than indigo, a green field becomes progressively bluer. A rug that reads blue-green in the protected areas and blue in the exposed ones is showing its age honestly.

Black corrodes. Iron-based black dyes chemically attack wool over decades, so the black areas of an old rug are frequently worn lower than the rest — you can feel the relief with your hand. It is a genuine age indicator and is very hard to fake convincingly.

Synthetic dyes

Aniline dyes arrived in the weaving regions from the 1870s and were widespread by 1900. The early ones were poor: fugitive, prone to bleeding, and inclined to fade towards grey or brown rather than towards a softer version of themselves.

Modern synthetic dyes — chrome dyes in particular — are genuinely stable and lightfast. This matters for buying: on a rug woven in the last fifty years, "natural dye" is an aesthetic preference rather than a durability argument.

Reading a single strand

Bend the pile back and look at one strand from base to tip. Natural dye is usually richer at the base, where light never reached, and softer at the tip. A strand that is identical top to bottom means either a young rug or a chemically treated one.

Colour run

A damp white cloth pressed firmly on a saturated colour should pick up nothing. If it does, the dye is unstable and any wet cleaning becomes a professional job with dye-set pretreatment.

Fading

All rugs fade. What matters is whether they fade evenly.

A rug with one half in afternoon sun and the other in shade develops a permanent, visible line. Rotating 180 degrees twice a year is the entire remedy and it works — see rug cleaning.

Silk fades faster than wool. Synthetics that are solution-dyed barely fade at all — see synthetic rugs.

Choosing colour for a room

Two practical rules that survive fashion.

Busy and mid-toned hides everything. A multicoloured field with a mid-value ground disguises soil, wear and pet hair. Plain, pale and plain, dark all show it — pale shows soil, dark shows lint.

See it in your own light. Rug shop lighting is warm and directional and chosen to flatter. Take a rug home on approval, or at minimum see it in daylight, before committing. The same rug can read madder-brown in a shop and orange in a north-facing room.

By colour

Red rugs are the foundation of the whole tradition — madder grew across the weaving belt — and are currently cheap because fashion moved rather than because the rugs did.

Blue rugs have exactly one historical source, and indigo's dip-count depth is why blue grounds show abrash more strongly than any other colour.

Green rugs have no traditional dyestuff at all: green was indigo overdyed with a yellow, and because the yellows fail first, old green rugs drift towards blue.

Grey rugs have almost no traditional precedent, which is why so much grey stock is older weaving stripped and redyed.

And beige, cream and ivory rugs get the honest maintenance account — undyed fleece against dyed cream, and what a pale rug actually costs you in a room that gets used. White rugs take that further: wool does not come in true white, so every one has been bleached, brightened or made from synthetic fibre — and the distinction decides how it ages.

Black rugs are the interesting case, because traditional black corrodes the wool it is dyed into, which makes it one of the most reliable age indicators there is. Brown rugs are the opposite: the most practical ground colour available and almost nobody buys them, which is exactly why the value is there.

Pink rugs are usually not pink by intention at all — most antique pink is faded madder, and telling the two apart changes what the rug is worth.

And multicolour rugs explain the whole tradition: every rug woven before about 1950 is multicoloured, that was a technical necessity rather than a look, and the practical advantages that fell out of it are why a busy field is still the right answer for most rooms in daily use.

Common questions

What is abrash?

Horizontal banding across a rug's field where the weaver moved to a new batch of dyed yarn. It is a natural consequence of small-batch dyeing, it is characteristic of hand weaving with natural dye, and it is now regarded as desirable rather than as a fault.

Are natural dyes better than synthetic?

They age better, which is the honest version of the claim. Natural dyes fade towards a softer version of the same colour; early synthetics often shift towards grey or brown. Modern synthetic dyes are far more stable than the early ones, so on a contemporary rug the difference is smaller than the marketing suggests.
