Synthetic Rugs
Polypropylene, nylon, polyester and PET — genuinely good at some jobs and oversold at others, with the differences between them explained.

Synthetics are not a compromise everywhere. In three or four specific situations they are the correct answer, and in the rest they are the cheap one.
The four fibres
- Polypropylene (olefin)
- Waterproof, stain-resistant, fade-resistant. Crushes.
- Nylon (polyamide)
- Most resilient synthetic; best abrasion resistance. Costs more.
- Polyester (PET)
- Softest and cheapest. Crushes permanently, holds oils.
- Triexta / PTT
- Newer; polyester-adjacent with better resilience claims
Polypropylene is hydrophobic — it does not absorb water at all, so waterborne stains sit on the surface and lift off, and the fibre cannot mildew. That makes it genuinely the right material for outdoor rugs, conservatories and kitchens. Its weakness is resilience: it crushes and does not recover.
Nylon is the resilient one, with the best abrasion resistance of the synthetics and some ability to spring back. It is what commercial and contract broadloom is made of. It costs more and is less stain-resistant than polypropylene unless treated.
Polyester is soft and cheap and the weakest performer. It crushes permanently and it is oleophilic — it attracts and holds oily soil, which is why polyester rugs develop grey traffic paths that cleaning does not fully lift.
Where synthetics genuinely win
Water. Any room where standing water is normal — bathrooms, kitchens, poolside, utility rooms. Wool tolerates humidity and not saturation.
UV. Solution-dyed synthetics hold colour under sustained sun far better than any natural fibre. Wool fades; solution-dyed polypropylene barely does.
Short horizons. A rental, a playroom, a room that will be reconfigured. Paying for a fifty-year fibre you will use for four is simply paying more.
Budget at scale. A large room where the alternative is bare floor.
Where they lose

- Waterproof and mildew-proof (polypropylene)
- Excellent stain resistance; many can be hosed down or bleach-cleaned
- Solution-dyed versions barely fade in sun
- A fifth to a tenth the price of wool
- Genuinely the correct choice outdoors and in wet rooms
Against it
- Crush permanently — traffic lines appear within a couple of years
- Melt and glaze under heat; a dropped ember leaves a permanent mark
- Cannot be repaired or restored
- No resale value
- Read as synthetic in daylight, whatever the showroom suggested
The crushing is the thing people underestimate. Wool recovers from compression because each fibre is a three-dimensional wave — the mechanism described in wool rug properties. Synthetics have no equivalent, so a sofa leg mark or a traffic line is permanent from the day it forms.
Heat
Every synthetic here melts. Radiant heat from a fireplace, a dropped cigarette or a steam cleaner on a hot setting will glaze the pile into a hard shiny patch that cannot be reversed. This is the one failure mode wool does not share — wool self-extinguishes.
Choosing well within the category
Specify solution-dyed for anything in sun. Prefer dense low pile over sparse high pile — density is what resists crushing. Prefer a woven backing over heavy latex, which becomes brittle and separates.
And check construction: most synthetic rugs are machine-made, which is fine and honest, but some are tufted with the shorter lifespan that implies — see hand-tufted rugs.
Care
The easiest of any fibre. Vacuum normally, spot-clean with water and mild detergent, and polypropylene can be taken outside and hosed. Avoid heat in every form.

What is solution-dyed polypropylene?
Colour added to the molten polymer before the fibre is extruded, so it runs all the way through rather than sitting on the surface. It is dramatically more resistant to fading and bleach than piece-dyed fibre, and worth specifying for anything in sun.
