How to Get Vomit Out of a Rug

Acidic, protein-based and fast-acting on dye — why this one is genuinely urgent, and the order of operations that limits the damage.

Vomit combines three problems: solid matter, protein, and acid strong enough to alter rug dye within hours. The acid is what makes it urgent.

Why it is urgent

Stomach acid sits somewhere around pH 1.5 to 3.5. Most rug dyes — natural ones especially — are stable only within a much narrower band, so prolonged contact bleaches or shifts the colour chemically.

That is damage to the dye rather than soil on the fibre, and no amount of later cleaning reverses it. This is the same mechanism as pet urine operating from the opposite end of the pH scale.

Order of operations

  1. Remove the solids first, with a spoon or a stiff card, lifting rather than pressing. Pressing forces material into the pile.
  2. Blot the liquid with weight, using thick white cloth. Change sections constantly.
  3. Rinse with cold water, applied sparingly to a cloth, and blot. Several cycles. This is the step that dilutes the acid, and it is the one that saves the colour.
  4. Neutralise gently — a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in a cup of cold water, blotted on and then blotted off. Mild alkali against the acid, tested on a corner first.
  5. Enzyme cleaner for the protein and the smell, following the label dwell time.
  6. Dry with air on both faces, lifting the rug clear of the floor.

Cold, never hot

Heat sets the protein permanently and locks the odour into the fibre. It also felts wool. This is the same rule as blood, and for the same chemistry.

The smell

Vomit odour is protein breaking down, and it will not vacuum out or air away.

Enzyme cleaner is the only domestic method that addresses it, because enzymes digest the protein rather than masking it. Apply after the physical cleaning, give it the full dwell time, and let it dry naturally.

Bicarbonate of soda left on the dry area overnight and vacuumed off handles residual odour reasonably well as a second pass.

Not vinegar as a first move — it is acidic, and acid is the thing that damaged the dye.

Check underneath

Vomit travels. Lift the rug and check the pad and the floor beneath — both will have taken some, and a clean rug over a contaminated pad smells within days.

Pads are usually cheaper to replace than to clean.

When it is a professional job

Any rug of value, once the colour has visibly changed. Anything silk or viscose. Large volume. And any case where the smell persists after enzyme treatment, which usually means material reached the foundation.

Common questions

Why does vomit discolour a rug so quickly?

Stomach acid has a pH around 1.5 to 3.5, far outside the range most rug dyes are stable in. The bleaching or colour-shifting happens within hours, and it is a change to the dye itself rather than soil on the surface — so it cannot be cleaned out afterwards.

Is pet vomit different from human vomit?

Chemically similar, and pet vomit frequently contains bile, which is strongly coloured and stains in its own right, plus food dye from commercial pet food. Both are urgent for the same reason and treated the same way.
