What viscose actually is
Not silk, and not a natural fibre in any meaningful sense.
Viscose is regenerated cellulose: wood pulp dissolved in caustic soda and carbon disulphide, extruded through a spinneret, and solidified into a filament. The sheen is real, and it is the entire commercial argument for the material.
It is sold as art silk, artificial silk, bamboo silk, banana silk, rayon, modal and lyocell. All of those are the same family, and the "silk" in every one of those names is marketing.
Why water is not a cleaning agent here
Cellulose in this regenerated form is hydrolysed by water. That is a chemical change to the fibre, not soil sitting on it.
Three things follow, and they are why every ordinary cleaning instinct fails.
It loses most of its strength when wet. Wet viscose can be crushed, matted or broken by handling that any other fibre shrugs off — including the pressure of blotting.
It yellows. The fibre discolours where it has been wetted, and the colour comes from the fibre itself, so there is no deposit to remove.
It distorts. Wet fibres that are rubbed mat together permanently and lose the sheen that was the reason for buying it, leaving a dull patch that reads as a stain in any light.
Clean water does this. Not just spills.
A glass of plain water, a wet shoe, a damp mop, a steam cleaner and a pet accident all produce the same yellow-brown mark. There is no "safe" liquid. This is the property that makes viscose unlike every other fibre in rug materials compared — and it is why the honest advice is a purchasing decision rather than a cleaning technique.
Routine care, which is all dry
Vacuum weekly, suction only, no beater bar. A rotating brush shreds viscose — the filaments are weak and they fuzz rather than springing back. If your vacuum will not disable the brush, use the upholstery attachment.
Vacuum in the pile direction, not against it.
Rotate twice a year. Viscose is also poor on lightfastness, so uneven fading compounds the problems it already has.
Use a pad. Reduces the flexing that mats the fibre from underneath.
Keep it out of traffic. Every reduction in footfall is worth more on this fibre than on any other, because the damage is not recoverable.
Spills
The window is very short and the sequence is unusual, so it is worth reading before you need it.
- Lift solids with a blunt edge. Do not press down.
- Blot with a dry white cloth, straight down, no rubbing. Rubbing mats the fibre permanently and that alone will leave a visible patch.
- Keep blotting with fresh dry cloth while anything transfers.
- For grease, cover with cornflour or talc, leave several hours, vacuum. Repeat rather than escalating.
- Dry it fast — a fan on the area, cool air, never heat.
- Stop. Do not add water to "rinse". This is where most viscose damage is created, and it is done by the owner rather than by the spill.
Damage control on a mark that has formed
Modest, and worth being clear that this is mitigation rather than removal.
Blend the edge. A tide line reads as a stain mostly because of its hard boundary. Very lightly damp a wider area with a barely moist cloth, feathering outward, and dry it immediately with a fan. You are spreading the boundary over a distance the eye stops reading as a ring. It often helps. It sometimes makes things worse, and there is no way to know in advance.
Restore the nap. Where the surface has matted and dulled, brushing very gently with a soft brush in the pile direction once fully dry can recover some sheen.
Accept the rest. A viscose rug in a room in use will accumulate marks. That is the material behaving normally, not a failure of care.
Professional cleaning
Worth knowing what a good plant will and will not say.
Most rug plants will either decline viscose or accept it with a written disclaimer. The realistic service is dry compound cleaning — an absorbent powder worked in and vacuumed out — which lifts surface soil without introducing water.

Care cannot solve this, so placement and purchasing have to.
If you own one: put it somewhere with no food, no drink, no animals and no outside door. A low-traffic bedroom or a formal sitting room. Treat it as a five-year object.
If you are buying: the terms to recognise are art silk, artificial silk, bamboo silk, banana silk, rayon, modal and lyocell. All viscose. If a seller cannot or will not state the fibre plainly, that is the answer.
If you want the look: real silk for a wall or a room that is looked at rather than crossed, a fine wool rug for sheen with durability, or Tibetan and Nepalese weaving, where high-altitude wool has a natural lustre that survives being walked on.
