The useful question is not which rugs are "natural" but what has been added to them. Construction answers that more reliably than any label.
Where off-gassing actually comes from

Latex is the dominant source. Hand-tufted rugs hold their pile in with an adhesive layer, and it releases VOCs for six to twelve weeks as it cures. That rubbery smell on a new rug is diagnostic — see why a new rug smells.
The pad is the overlooked one. Cheap PVC and synthetic-foam pads off-gas more than many rugs do, and they sit in the room permanently. Felt or felt-and-natural-rubber solves it — rug pads.
Construction is the reliable signal

A hand-knotted wool rug is warp, weft and knots. There is nothing in it to release, which is why it is the straightforward answer if this matters to you.
Wool's genuine advantages
Not marketing, for once:
Naturally flame-retardant. Wool has a high ignition temperature and self-extinguishes, with no added treatment. Synthetics either need chemical retardants or melt.
Traps particulate rather than letting it recirculate, and releases it to vacuuming.
Moisture regulation works against dust mites, which need relative humidity above roughly 50% — a real if modest allergy benefit. The mechanism is in wool rug properties.
Certifications that mean something
Look for testing, not adjectives
"Natural", "eco", "non-toxic" and "green" are unregulated and mean whatever the seller wants. Certifications backed by actual emissions testing are different, and they are the only claims worth paying for.
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 — tests the finished textile for a long list of harmful substances. Widely used and meaningful.
GOLS / GOTS — organic standards for latex and textiles respectively, with supply-chain auditing.
GoodWeave — labour rather than chemistry, with unannounced inspection. Relevant if child labour is a concern, particularly in Nepalese and Indian production.
CRI Green Label Plus — emissions testing, though oriented to fitted carpet.
Practical buying
Ask three questions and get the answers in writing:
- Is there a latex or adhesive backing?
- Has a stain-resistance treatment been applied?
- What is the pad made of?
Then, if it matters: buy hand-knotted or flatweave wool, on a felt pad, and air any new rug thoroughly before it goes into a bedroom or nursery.
Where the trade-off bites
The lowest-emission options — hand-knotted and flatweave — are also the most expensive, and the highest-emission option is the cheap plush rug that is most attractive for a child's room.
If budget forces the tufted rug, the mitigation is real: unroll it and air it in a ventilated space for several weeks before it goes into the room where someone sleeps.
