Blood is the simplest stain on this site chemically and the one most often ruined by instinct. The instinct is hot water. Hot water is exactly wrong.
Why cold, always
Blood is protein. Protein coagulates with heat — the same reaction as an egg white turning from clear to solid. Once coagulated it bonds mechanically to the fibre and stops dissolving.
That is irreversible. A fresh blood spill treated with cold water usually disappears completely; the same spill treated with hot water frequently never comes out.
Cold water is the whole technique
No warm, no hot, no steam. If you do nothing else right, do this — it is the difference between a stain that lifts entirely and one that is permanent.
Fresh blood
- Blot with weight, cold, using a white cloth. Change to dry sections constantly.
- Cold water on the cloth, not poured on the rug. Dampen, blot, repeat.
- Keep going. Fresh blood releases readily and usually comes out completely, but it takes more cycles than people expect.
- Weight a dry cloth on the area while it dries, to draw remaining moisture upward rather than letting it wick back.
If cold water alone stalls
In escalating order, testing on the back of a corner first:
Salt water. A teaspoon of salt in a cup of cold water. Mildly effective on protein and completely safe on wool.
A drop of wool-safe detergent in cold water, on the cloth rather than the rug, then rinsed by blotting with plain cold water.
Enzyme cleaner — the one genuinely effective escalation. Protein-digesting enzymes break blood down rather than dissolving it. Follow the dwell time, and keep it cold.

Dried blood
Dried blood oxidises from red to brown, which looks alarming and is not a problem in itself — it has not chemically bonded the way heat-set blood has.
Re-wet with cold water, leave fifteen minutes to soften, then proceed as for fresh. Expect three or four cycles. Most of it will release.
By fibre

A note on wool specifically
Wool is itself a protein fibre — keratin. That is why enzyme cleaners need care: an enzyme that digests protein does not distinguish between the blood and the rug.
