Candle wax is one of the more forgiving spills, because it is a solid sitting in the pile rather than a liquid bound to the fibre. Two methods work.
Method 1: freeze and crack
The safer of the two, and the right default.
- Let the wax harden completely. Do not touch it while soft.
- Apply an ice pack or a bag of frozen peas for ten to fifteen minutes.
- Crack the wax by flexing the pile gently, or tap it with the back of a spoon.
- Pick out the fragments by hand and vacuum the residue.
- Repeat — you will not get it all in one pass.
Frozen wax becomes brittle and releases from the fibre cleanly. No heat, no risk of felting or melting, and no chance of driving colour deeper.
Method 2: melt and absorb
Faster, and it carries real risk on the wrong fibre.
- Scrape away as much hardened wax as possible first.
- Cover with several layers of plain brown paper or a clean cotton cloth. Not printed paper — the ink transfers.
- Warm iron, lowest setting, no steam. Press briefly and move constantly.
- The wax melts and wicks into the paper. Move to a clean section and repeat.
- Stop as soon as no more transfers.
Heat is fibre-dependent
Wool felts under heat, moisture and pressure together, and felting is irreversible. Synthetics melt and glaze into a hard shiny patch that cannot be repaired. If you are not certain of the fibre, freeze instead — it works on everything.
Coloured wax
Two problems in sequence, and the order matters.
Remove the wax first, by freezing. Then treat the remaining dye separately as an ink stain — isopropyl alcohol on a cloth, working from the outside in, blotting rather than rubbing. See how to get ink out of a rug.
Heat is especially wrong with coloured wax: melting it drives the dye deeper into the fibre before the wax carrying it has been lifted out.
The residue
After the wax is gone a faint greasy mark often remains, because candle wax is substantially oil.
Treat it as grease: cover with a dry absorbent powder, leave several hours, vacuum, repeat. Water will not lift it.

Prevention
Candle wax on rugs is almost always from a candle placed on a low table or the floor near seating. A tray or a hurricane glass solves it entirely, and costs less than the cleaning does.
