Hired and domestic extractors are designed for fitted carpet: a synthetic pile glued to a floor that cannot be lifted, moved or immersed. A rug is none of those things, and most of the machine's assumptions stop holding.
What the machine actually does
It sprays hot water and detergent into the pile, agitates, and extracts most of it back. On fitted carpet that is a reasonable compromise, because there is no alternative.
On a rug, four things go wrong.
Heat. Most hired machines run hot. Heat sets protein stains, moves dye, and on wool contributes to felting — the cuticle scales interlock irreversibly.
Incomplete extraction. The machine leaves moisture in the pile and, critically, in the foundation. A carpet dries against a warm subfloor; a rug lying on a cool hard floor does not, and damp at the foundation is how rot and mildew start.
Uneven shrinkage. A cotton foundation wetted unevenly shrinks unevenly. The rug never lies flat again, and blocking it back is a professional job.
Detergent residue. Extractors leave surfactant in the pile, which is sticky and attracts soil faster than the original soiling did. That is why a shampooed rug often looks worse three months later.
Never on wool, silk, viscose, jute or sisal
Wool felts and its dye moves. Silk loses strength wet. Viscose is marked permanently by clean water alone. Jute and sisal watermark and rot. That rules out most of the rugs people actually want to clean.

If you use one anyway
On a suitable synthetic rug:
Cold or warm, never hot. Heat glazes synthetic pile into a hard shiny patch.
Test on a corner for colour transfer first.
Use less detergent than the label says — residue is the main failure.
Do a plain-water pass afterwards to rinse, then extract repeatedly with no solution.

What to do instead
Small, colourfast, all-wool rug — wash it yourself outdoors on a hard surface. Full method in washing a wool rug.
Small cotton flatweave — domestic washing machine, cold, gentle.

The economics
A hired extractor is roughly $35–50 a day. A professional wash on an 8×10 is $240–640.
That gap is why people hire the machine, and it is a false economy on a rug worth more than a few hundred pounds: the machine cannot dust the rug first, cannot rinse it properly, and cannot dry it under tension. On a $3,000 wool rug it risks the rug to save $400 — the real cost of owning a rug.
Common questions
Can you use a Rug Doctor on a wool rug?
It is not advisable. Hired extractors run hot, and heat plus moisture plus the machine's agitation is the exact combination that felts wool and moves dye. On a cotton foundation the water also causes uneven shrinkage, so the rug never lies flat again.
What about on a synthetic rug?
Usually fine, on a cold or warm setting, provided the rug is not hand-tufted. The risk with synthetics is heat glazing the pile, and with tufted construction it is water dissolving the latex holding the pile in.
