The Anatomy of a Rug

Warp, weft, pile, fringe and selvedge — the parts of a rug, what each one does, and why knowing them turns a vague impression into a specific judgement.

A rug looks like one object and is in fact a structure with about six distinct parts, each doing a different job. Knowing them is the difference between "this rug seems nice" and "the selvedges are original, the ends have been resecured, and the pile is even across the traffic line."

That shift — from impression to specific observation — is most of what separates a confident buyer from a hopeful one.

The parts

Warp
Lengthwise threads under tension. Become the fringe.
Weft
Crosswise threads locking each knot row in place.
Foundation
Warp + weft together. The rug's structural fabric.
Pile
The cut knot ends. The surface you walk on.
Selvedge
The bound side edges. First thing to wear.
Fringe
The warps continuing past the pile at each end.

Warp

The vertical threads, strung on the loom under tension before a single knot is tied. They run the full length of the rug and define its length.

Warp material is a regional tell. City workshops use cotton, which is dimensionally stable and holds tension evenly — one reason Persian city rugs lie flat. Nomadic and village weavers use wool, which is what they had, and wool warps are part of why tribal rugs are more likely to be slightly irregular.

Silk warps appear in very fine weaving, where a thinner warp allows a higher knot count.

What to look at. Turn a corner back and look at the warps between knot rows. Evenly spaced warps mean an evenly strung loom. Warps at two levels — some sitting noticeably deeper than others — is depressed warp, a deliberate technique that packs knots more densely and produces a stiffer, heavier rug. It is a mark of certain weaving centres, not a defect.

Weft

The horizontal threads, passed between the warps after each row of knots and beaten down firmly to lock the row in place.

Most rugs use two wefts per row, some use one, some alternate a thick and a thin. The count and the material are among the details a specialist uses to place a rug regionally — see rug authentication.

Wefts are also what holds the rug's width. When wefts break down, the rug loses structure along its length and starts to ripple.

Foundation

Warp and weft together. Everything in the rug that is not pile.

This is the part that determines whether a rug can be saved. Pile wearing down is normal and reweavable; the foundation splitting is structural. A rug worn to the foundation over a large area is a much bigger job than one with a bald patch — rug repair.

Hold it up to a window

Light through the foundation shows what the surface hides: thin areas where the pile is nearly gone, old repairs as patches of different density, and previous holes as areas of different colour. It takes five seconds and reveals more than any amount of looking at the face.

Pile

The surface: the cut ends of thousands of knots, standing up from the foundation.

Pile has a direction, set by the way each knot is tied and the whole rug woven from one end. Run your hand along the length and one way feels smooth, the other rough. That is the nap, and it is why a rug looks lighter from one end of a room and darker from the other — the same rug, the same light, the pile catching it differently.

The practical consequence: orient the rug so the nap runs away from the main entrance to the room. The rug reads darker and richer as you walk in.

Pile depth at the traffic line is the measurement that tells you how much life is left. Compare the centre of the rug with the path people take across it, using a fingernail. A noticeable step means the wear is already well advanced.

Selvedge

The finished side edges, where the outermost warps are bound — usually overcast with wool, sometimes wrapped around a bundle of several warps for strength.

Selvedges wear before anything else. They take abrasion from vacuum heads, chair legs, feet and the floor itself, and they are the thinnest part of the structure.

What it tells you. Intact original selvedges mean a rug that has been looked after. Rebound selvedges in matching wool are honest, competent restoration and should not worry you. Selvedges bound in obviously wrong colour, or in cotton on a wool rug, are a cheap repair. Broken selvedges with warps escaping need attention now, because the damage moves inward.

Fringe

At each end, the warp threads emerge from the foundation and continue as fringe. On a hand-knotted rug it is not decoration — it is structural, the ends of the threads the entire rug was built on.

That fact makes it one of the fastest checks available. On a machine-made or hand-tufted rug, the fringe is a separate strip sewn on afterwards to imitate the look. Fold the end back: on a hand-knotted rug the fringe threads run continuously into the body of the rug; on an imitation there is a seam.

Between pile and fringe there is usually a kilim end — a short band of flatweave that stops the last rows of knots from unravelling. When that band goes, knots start coming out and the rug loses length permanently. Securing a loose end is cheap; rebuilding lost rows is not. See cleaning rug fringes.

Reading a rug from its parts

Put it together and a two-minute inspection becomes systematic:

  1. Turn it over. Design clear on the back and continuous fringe warps means hand-knotted. Glued scrim means tufted. A mechanical grid means machine-made.
  2. Fold a corner back. Read the knot type and warp spacing; look at colour at the base of the pile against the tip.
  3. Run the selvedges through your fingers end to end, feeling for breaks and rebinding.
  4. Check both ends for a secure kilim band and continuous warps.
  5. Compare pile depth at the centre and at the traffic line.
  6. Hold it to a light. Thin spots, old repairs, previous holes.
  7. Feel the dark areas. Pile sitting lower in black or dark brown is corrosion — a genuine age indicator.

Common questions

What is the difference between warp and weft?

Warp threads run the length of the rug and are held under tension on the loom. Weft threads run across it, passed between the warps after each row of knots to lock the row in place. Together they form the foundation — everything in the rug that is not pile.

Why do rugs have fringe?

On a hand-knotted rug the fringe is not decoration at all: it is the warp threads themselves, emerging from the foundation at both ends. It exists because the rug had to come off the loom. On machine-made and tufted rugs the fringe is a separate strip sewn on to imitate that look.

What part of a rug wears out first?

The edges — selvedges and fringe — long before the field does, because they are the thinnest part of the structure and take abrasion from both sides. Rebinding a selvedge or securing a fringe end is routine maintenance, and doing it early prevents the far more expensive job of rebuilding lost foundation.
