Polypropylene vs Polyester vs Nylon

Three fibres sold as one category, failing in completely different ways — and which failure applies to your room decides it.

"Synthetic rug" gets used as a single category, and it covers three fibres that fail in completely different ways. Choosing between them is straightforward once you know which failure applies to your room.

Read across the rows rather than looking for a winner. Every fibre here has one column it owns and at least one it loses badly.

Polypropylene (olefin)

Owns: water, sun, stains, price.

It absorbs under 0.1% of its weight in water, which is why it can be hosed and left, and why it does not mildew. When solution-dyed — pigment added to the molten polymer before the fibre is extruded, so colour runs the full depth — it is effectively fade-proof, which nothing else on this page approaches.

Loses: resilience and oil. It crushes under furniture and along traffic lines and does not recover. And oil bonds to it permanently: a grease mark on polypropylene is a grease mark forever, which matters more than people expect in a kitchen — see grease and oil stains.

Right for: outdoor rugs, bathrooms, laundry rooms, entryways, sunrooms, boats, anywhere that gets wet.

Check for the words "solution dyed." "UV-treated" and "fade-resistant" are weaker claims — best materials for outdoor rugs.

Polyester

Owns: colour and hand. It takes bright, saturated dye better than the other two and it feels genuinely soft — softer than polypropylene by a clear margin.

Loses: resilience, and it is the worst of the three. Polyester pile flattens quickly and permanently, so a polyester rug looks noticeably tired at three or four years in a room in use. Recycled PET behaves the same way; the recycled content is a real environmental argument and not a performance one.

Right for: a low-traffic room on a budget with a five-year horizon, a bedroom rug that lives mostly under a bed, a nursery where washability matters more than lifespan.

Wrong for: anywhere with furniture on it, or any room you cross daily.

Nylon (polyamide)

Owns: abrasion resistance — the toughest fibre in ordinary rug use, and the reason it dominates commercial carpet. It also has genuinely good resilience, meaning it recovers from compression rather than staying flat.

Loses: sun, badly. Nylon degrades and fades under UV faster than either of the others, which is why using it outdoors on its durability figures is a mistake. It also absorbs more water and costs more.

Right for: heavy indoor traffic out of direct sun — halls, home offices under a desk chair, high-traffic rooms.

Wrong for: a sunny room, and anywhere outdoors.

Solution-dyed is the phrase that carries information

Whichever fibre you choose, solution dyeing beats conventional dyeing on fade resistance by a wide margin, because the colour is in the polymer rather than applied to finished yarn. It is most commonly available in polypropylene, which is part of why polypropylene wins outdoors — the fibre and the dye method reinforce each other.

Where synthetics genuinely beat wool

Worth stating clearly, because the category attracts more scorn than it deserves.

Anywhere with water. Wool handles occasional damp well and sustained damp badly. In a bathroom, beside a pool, on a terrace, a synthetic is the correct answer on the merits, not a compromise.

Sustained direct sun. Solution-dyed polypropylene holds colour where wool yellows and natural dyes shift.

Where the rug must be cleaned aggressively. Polypropylene tolerates bleach completely; no natural fibre does — common cleaning mistakes.

Short horizons. A rental, a child's room that will change, a phase. Buying a heritage rug for a phase is its own mistake.

Where wool still wins

Resilience, which is the property none of these three has. Wool fibres are coiled springs that recover from compression, which is why a wool rug still reads as a rug after thirty years of furniture sitting on it and a synthetic does not after eight.

Soil-shedding. Residual lanolin resists penetration and buys real minutes on a spill.

Repairability, on hand-knotted construction.

Flame retardance without chemical treatment.

Ageing. Wool ages; synthetics degrade. That is a difference you can see across a room.

Is it outdoors, or will it get wet? Solution-dyed polypropylene. Stop here.

Is it heavy indoor traffic out of sun? Nylon.

Is it a low-traffic room on a budget? Polyester, with a five-year expectation.

Is it a room you sit in, that you intend to keep? None of these — buy wool.

Common questions

Which synthetic rug fibre is best?

It depends entirely on the room, because they fail differently. Polypropylene for water and sun, and it is the only one worth putting outdoors. Nylon for pure abrasion resistance in heavy indoor traffic. Polyester for colour and softness on a short horizon. There is no general winner.

What is the difference between olefin and polypropylene?

Nothing — olefin is another name for polypropylene, and both terms appear on labels for the same fibre. If a listing uses one and a comparison uses the other, they are describing the same material.

Does polypropylene crush?

Yes, and this is its main weakness indoors. It has poor resilience, so under furniture and along traffic lines the pile flattens and does not recover. Nylon is far better on this, and wool is better still — which is why polypropylene belongs where water and sun matter more than pile recovery.
