How a Rug Is Actually Woven

Warping the loom, tying a row, beating the weft, shearing and washing — the sequence, and where the months actually go on a hand-knotted rug.

1. Warping the loom

The vertical threads — the warp — are strung under tension on the loom before a single knot is tied. They run the full length of the rug and determine its length.

Vertical looms are fixed in a workshop and can be any size. Tension is even and controllable, which is why city rugs lie flat.

Horizontal ground looms are staked out, rolled up and carried. They are narrow by necessity, which is why nomadic rugs are long and narrow, and their tension is harder to hold — which is part of why tribal rugs are more likely to be irregular in shape.

Warp material is a regional tell: cotton in workshop weaving for its stability, wool in village and nomadic work because that is what was to hand. See the anatomy of a rug.

2. Tying a row of knots

The weaver works across the width, tying one knot at a time around pairs of warps and cutting the yarn.

City weavers follow a cartoon — a scaled drawing showing every knot. Village and nomadic weavers work from memory and convention, which is precisely why their designs are geometric: stepped diagonals survive transmission by memory in a way that continuous curves do not. That single constraint is the origin of the two weaving worlds — Persian rugs sets out both.

3. Passing the weft, and beating it down

After each row of knots, one or more horizontal weft threads are passed between the warps and then beaten down hard with a heavy comb.

This is the stage that decides whether the rug is any good, and it is almost never discussed.

Beating compacts the row and locks the knots. Too light and the rug is loose and will shed; too hard and the warps distort. The force has to be consistent across the width and across thousands of rows, by hand, over months — and small differences accumulate into a rug that ripples and will not lie flat.

Where some warps are deliberately held deeper than others — depressed warp — the knots pack more densely and the rug comes out stiffer and heavier. It is a technique associated with particular weaving centres, not a defect.

4. Shearing

The knots are tied with yarn longer than the finished pile, so the surface is uneven until the rug is sheared level.

Shearing is a finishing craft in its own right. The depth chosen changes how the design reads: a low shear sharpens fine detail, a deeper one gives softness and weight but blurs the drawing. On very fine work the rug may be sheared repeatedly, alternating with washing, until the pile is even enough for the pattern to resolve.

5. Finishing the edges and ends

The outermost warps are bound to form the selvedges. At each end, a short band of flatweave — the kilim end — stops the last knot rows unravelling, and the warps continue past it as the fringe.

None of that is decoration. Both are sacrificial and both are designed to be renewed, which is why they are the first things to fail and the cheapest things to repair — repairing rug edges and fringes.

6. Washing

The rug comes off the loom stiff, greasy and dull, and is washed — sometimes several times.

This removes spinning oils and loose fibre, sets the dyes, softens the handle and brings out the lustre of the wool. It is a manufacturing stage rather than cleaning, and the difference between a rug before and after washing is dramatic.

Some rugs then receive a chemical wash to soften the colour or add sheen. This is common and not inherently dishonest, but heavy washing weakens wool, and a rug that has been stripped and redyed is a different proposition — see rug colors and vintage rugs.

Where the time actually goes

The arithmetic that explains hand-knotted prices

A 9×12 rug at 150 knots per square inch is roughly 2.3 million knots. At 8,000–10,000 knots a day, that is around 250 working days — a year of one person's labour, on the knotting alone. Fine carpets at 300+ KPSI double it. Workshop rugs are woven by several weavers side by side to compress the calendar, not the labour. Before any of that: shearing the fleece, spinning, dyeing. Afterwards: shearing, finishing, washing.

That arithmetic is the whole answer to why hand-knotted rugs cost what they do, and why hand-tufted and machine-made construction exist. A tufting gun punches yarn through a backing in a fraction of the time; a power loom produces a rug in hours.

None of those is dishonest. What matters is knowing which one you are buying, and the check takes two seconds — turn it over. Types of rugs covers what you will see.

Flatweaving is a different process

No knots at all. The pattern is made by the weft threads themselves as they interlace with the warp, which is why a flatweave is thin, light and reversible.

It is considerably faster than knotting, which is why flatweaves cost less — and it is not easier. The structural constraints are tighter, particularly in slit-weave, where a long vertical colour boundary would weaken the fabric. That constraint is where the whole diagonal, stepped design language comes from — types of kilim.

Common questions

How long does it take to make a hand-knotted rug?

A 9×12 at moderate density is roughly a million knots. One weaver tying eight to ten thousand knots a day takes the better part of a year on that rug alone, before spinning, dyeing, shearing and washing. Workshop rugs are woven by several weavers side by side, which is why fine carpets are measured in weaver-years rather than weeks.

What is the hardest part of weaving a rug?

Keeping tension even. Every row is beaten down by hand, and small differences in force accumulate over thousands of rows into a rug that will not lie flat. It is why workshop rugs on fixed vertical looms are more regular than nomadic rugs woven on portable ground looms.

Why is the pile sheared after weaving rather than before?
