Oversized Rugs
Palace-size and larger — sourcing, delivery, padding and the cost curve that makes very large rugs better value per square foot than 8×10s.
Anything above about 10×14 feet counts as oversized, and the category behaves differently from the rest of the market in almost every respect.
The price anomaly
Rug prices do not scale linearly with area, and at the top end they bend downwards.

The reason is demand rather than production. Very few homes have a room that takes a 12×15, so those rugs sit in inventory, and dealers price to move them. Measure the route, not just the room
A 12×15 rug rolls into a tube three to four metres long that does not bend. Stairwells, lift cars, landings and doorways all defeat it. Measure the whole path from the street to the room before ordering, and ask the seller whether they will deliver and lay it.
Cleaning is the other constraint people miss. Not every rug plant has a wash floor and drying capacity for a 14×20, and the ones that do charge accordingly. Ask before buying, not after — DIY vs professional.
Where to find them
Antique oversized rugs exist in Persian village weaving — Heriz, Sultanabad, Sarouk — because they were woven for large European and American houses. Tribal weaving essentially never reaches this size, since nomadic looms were portable and narrow.
Contemporary production handles it comfortably. Indian and Pakistani workshops weave room-size and larger routinely.

Design at scale
Large fields need design that can carry them. An all-over repeat holds a big rug together; a single central medallion on a 14×20 can leave the field looking empty and the medallion stranded. The layouts are discussed in rug patterns.
Scale of drawing matters too. Motifs sized for a 5×8 look fussy at 12×15 — which is one reason Oushak and Sultanabad designs, drawn large, work so well in big rooms.
Padding
Pads do not come this big. You will be joining two or three pieces of felt, butted rather than overlapped so there is no ridge under the rug. Tape the seams on the underside. It is worth the trouble for the reasons in rug pads.
